I’ve got no skill with photography and barely any skill in writing to express anything. I was going to post this last weekend but ran out of time and energy, so here is the photo dump instead.
Full album link. Sorry I’m crap at photos.

Not really, but thanks for the sentiment. Busy at work this week and going to be occupied for a while.

I am very curious about these mysterious “dead” jobs where there is nothing to be done.

I work for a small oil & gas company. My role is software & mapping support for a group of geologists, engineers & landmen , and I also do database management and some industry surveillance. There are always week-to-week “ maintenance” tasks that need to get done, but if there aren’t many additional requests coming to me on a given day, for whatever reason, it’s a slow day.

Appreciate the details. Do you find you enjoy it? I’ve been burnt out for half a decade and counting.

cool - lots of neat GM stuff and I love that sparkly Miata - it even clearly shows in the pics - it must have been blinding in person :)

Yeah actually that is one of the points where I tried to take some decent pics - it was a very interesting paint job and really shiny in person. I need practice.

Most days I do - I like to be busy/productive, and to help my coworkers and solve problems/challenges that come up . Great group of people, pretty laid-back environment, good pay and because it began as a start-up a couple years ago , I’m actually a minor equity holder. It’s rewarding to be part of a good team, but I’d love for my day job to be more creative at some point in my life (perhaps a second career once I’ve socked enough away doing this kind of work).
But I’m good at what I do, and it comes easy to me, it pays well and is pretty low-stress - very hard to complain. If I’d ended up with a good job in my degree field (graphic design), there might have been some moments of greater enjoyment, but I’d surely have more stress and be making less. On the balance, I feel very happy & fortunate to end up where I have.

Graphic design, according to the friends I know who have forayed into that field, is a tough and often unrewarding industry. I’m genuinely happy for you that you have a good work life, even if not on the original path.

Thank you. I hope you find a way out of the rut. “Burnt out” is not a good way to spend your life... I was definitely there after 9 years at a big corporation. In hindsight, l osing my job there because they closed our office was one of the best things that ever happened to me.
I began in engineering (civil - really wanted to be an architect) and kept at it for three years before finally changing things up. So I’m a designer at heart with engineer tendencies, a very good mix for the job I ended up in. A next-door neighbor who was a geologist started me down this path; I owe him a lot. I still do some design work occasionally: just logo design, for small companies & organizations. It’s nice to have that creative outlet, but have it completely on my terms, and not have to rely on it to put food on the table.
If it give you any sense of how laid-back our workplace is, my 6 year-old is currently just outside my office playing around on the ping-pong table that’s just outside my door... ha!

Well, it did fund a mid life crisis, so I am not complaining too much, but I worry about job sustainability a lot. I’d like to transition to direct software development, but that’s a long uphill battle to be market competitive.
